AI Connector for Protected Docs
8 min
Let readers of your protected documentation connect Claude, ChatGPT (or any MCP client) to the docs they already have access to. Readers verify with their email. They don't need an Archbee account or an API key.
What readers get
- Read only access with two tools: search (semantic search) and fetch (open a page as Markdown).
- Only published spaces protected with Magic Link where the reader's email (or email domain) is on the access list.
- Access is checked on every request: remove an email from the list and that reader loses access right away. Conditional content rules still apply.
Enable it (Admin)
- Make sure your plan includes Magic Link access control.
- Go to Settings → Organization API key.
- Under AI agent access for documentation readers, switch it to Enabled.
- Share the connector URL below with your readers.
Turning this off disconnects every reader immediately.
Connector URL
Replace <your-docs-domain> with the domain of your published docs, for example docs.example.com:
https://api.archbee.com/api/public-mcp-visitor/<your-docs-domain>/mcp
Connect Claude (reader)
- In Claude, open Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector.
- Enter a name and the connector URL from your docs team.
- Leave OAuth Client ID and OAuth Client Secret empty.
- Click Connect. An Archbee page opens and asks for your email.
- Enter the email that has access to the docs, then click Authorize access in the email you receive.
- Go back to the original tab. It continues on its own, and Claude is connected.
Connect ChatGPT (reader)
- In ChatGPT, create a custom connector with the connector URL and OAuth as the authentication method.
- Leave the OAuth client fields empty.
- Connect, then follow steps 4 to 6 above.
Access lasts 30 days. After that, connect again.
How readers get on the access list
A reader's email (or their whole email domain, like example.com) must be on the space's Magic Link access list. There are two ways to get it there:
- An Admin adds it in Archbee. In the space settings, under Public Access Control → Magic Link, add the email or domain.
- The reader asks for it. Submit their email with the Request Magic Link Access endpointRequest Magic Link Access endpoint. It lands under Pending requests in the Magic Link settings, Admins are notified, and an Admin clicks Approve request.
Full flow
- The reader's email gets on the access list.
- The reader adds the connector URL in Claude or ChatGPT and verifies with the same email.
- The reader asks questions. Their AI searches and reads the spaces they have access to and answers from your docs.
Access changes apply right away: if the reader is already connected, a newly added space shows up on their next question, and a removed one disappears.
Good to know
- A connection works only for the docs domain it was created for. Readers of several doc sites add one connector per site.
- Readers never see unpublished drafts, private spaces or spaces their email is not allowed on.
- For full access to your whole organization (including writing), use the Anthropic Claude Connector instead.
Troubleshooting
- No email arrives: check spam, and confirm the email (or its domain) is on the space's Magic Link access list.
- Connected, but Claude finds nothing: the email is not allowed on any published Magic Link space for that domain. Get the email on the access list (see above).
- Connection refused: the feature is turned off, or the plan no longer includes Magic Link.
